The HAVILAND CLUB NEWSLETTER January 9, 2018

The HAVILAND CLUB NEWSLETTER

January 9, 2018

This is a Newsletter to the Members of the Haviland Club.

All activities pertain to member-only activities unless otherwise indicated.

We are accepting new members. If interested, please contact thehavilandclub@gmail.com.

Sigh. The Christmas decorations have come down and the moosemilk is almost gone—as we enter the Canadian season of “Is spring come yet?” Of course there are fun winter activities, which we urge everyone to enjoy, like skiing, snowshoeing, and coming to the Haviland Club to hang out with friends. It doesn’t have to be an evening, or a planned activity. Come on a morning, afternoon or evening to sit by a fire with friends or curl up with a book. Check out this picture of the lounge.  Is there a more beautiful winter place to be?

Coming Up: Drop Dead Gorgeous!: Your Entertainment Committee is working on a Murder Mystery for the Saturday before Valentine’s Day, February 10. Drop Dead Gorgeous; Murder at the Bootlegger’s Valentine’s Bash, will feature a murder or three, music, dancing, a chance to play a role and to ‘sherlock’ out the killer before it’s too late! Stay tuned for more next week—and let Hank, Cathy or Mark know if you plan to come, so the group can come up with the perfect, twisted persona for you to play. Remember, there’s no work for you to do that evening and no real acting, just playing pretend, dressing up a little (or not), and having fun and more fun.

A Win-Win-Window Proposal: Have you noticed how warm the Club is now? It’s because of the Innerg Interior Insulating Windows (www.innergwindows.com the Executive recently installed in most of the downstairs windows, eliminating heat loss and drafts and making the Club considerably more comfortable. Some members have been so impressed with the results that they’ve had these interior windows installed in their homes. Now, if members choose to purchase these windows for their homes, the Manufacturer has agreed to rebate 8% of the cost of the windows to The Haviland Club’s building repairs account!  You get increased comfort and cut your heating and cooling costs and the Club gets improvement money. For a quote or to learn more, contact Barry MacLean at 902-367-4601.

New Event: Monthly Vegan Potluck. VegPEI welcomes Club members to come to a fabulous vegan potluck on the last Monday of each month. The first Vegan Potluck will take place January 29th. See below for more information.

Coming Activities: (All events are for members and their guests only unless “Public Event” is indicated.)

The Craft Club Returns! Wednesday January 10, 7 PM

We mentioned last week how impressed people touring the Club during the levee were with the quilting. Back to work next week to finish them up!

Coffee Club is back, Thursday Morning 10:00 to 11:30

Come and join us in the lounge for discussions by the fire, treats and coffee for a buck. Discussions range over a variety of topics; Mark and Bert can bring you up to date on the upcoming Murder Mystery and the search for Esther Lowden. Please Note: If schools are closed, coffee club is cancelled that day.

Friday, January 12, $5 Friday with Giovanni! Bar opens at 4, draws and dinner at 6.

Come out, come out, to the once-delayed $5 Friday featuring our new friend Giovanni: real Italian spaghetti and meatballs. This is going to be a fun, delightful treat, and of course dinner for the impossibly low price of $5! We also believe many of our new members and new member applicants will be in attendance, so come meet them. Could we ask, please, that you let us know if you’re planning to dine with us Friday? Just hit reply to this email. We’d like to let Giovanni know so he can prepare.

Saturday, January 13 – Saturday Afternoon at the Races, 1:30 PM

Come join the group at Saturday Afternoon at the Races, this coming Saturday. Once again we’re meeting for lunch at noon, and staying for at least the first five races. Put your money down, participate in a little friendly low-cost gambling—you likely won’t win or lose much unless you feel like gambling big, but you’re sure to have a good time!

Tuesday January 16, 7 PM – Book Club

Time to discuss Angie Thomas’s The Hate U Give and perhaps also Lincoln on the Bardo by George Saunders. Come join a fascinating, insightful conversation, and to help pick the next reads.

Robbie Burrrrrns Scotch Tasting, January 26, 7 PM

THIS PUBLIC EVENT IS SOLD OUT.

Monday, January 29: VegPEI Vegan Potluck Dinner, Doors Open at 6:30, Dinner at 7 (Public Event)

VegPEI welcomes members to join us the last Monday of every month for our fabulous vegan potluck. It’s strongly recommended that you bring a food item so there’s enough for everyone. If you’re new to vegan food—no worries! Just ensure the dish you bring doesn’t include animal flesh of any kind, dairy (cheese, milk, butter, etc.), eggs, gelatin or honey. If you bring a dish, please bring a list of ingredients that we can display. If you need more help or suggestions, don’t hesitate to contact us on our Facebook page. We also ask that everyone bring their own plates, bowls, utensils etc. Minimum donation is two dollars if you bring a dish; minimum donation is seven dollars if you do not bring a dish. You don’t need to be a vegan or vegetarian to come, just bring an open mind and an empty belly!

Saturday February 10, Time to be decided—Murder Mystery! (Public Event)

It’s the Bootleggers’ Valentines Bash at the top bootlegger’s in town, a joint called Drop Dead Gorgeous. Present this evening are bootleggers from across the Island, their henchmen, and prominent members of the Island community. There’s live music, dancing and revelry…until things go horribly wrong. You’re part, should you be prepared to accept it, is to have fun, mingle, maybe dance a little, and play a role as you try to figure out whodunit—before someone else is killed! If you haven’t told Hank, Cathy or Mark you’re interested, please do, so the organizing team can think up a truly heinous, or maybe just fun persona for you!

Haviland Club Scotch Tasting, February 23, 7 PM (Public Event)

Back by popular demand, because so many people wished they’d moved quicker to get tickets for the January tasting. Join host by Gary Ready, and enjoy a fun, interesting evening. Tickets are $45 at the bar, and don’t wait because only 26 will be sold, and they go fast—as the January event in clearly shows.
