The HAVILAND CLUB NEWSLETTER

November 14, 2017

The Haviland Club Annual General Meeting is tomorrow, Wednesday at 7 PM in the great room. Come hear how your Club performed in the last year.

Our Apologies for how busy the Club was last Friday evening. This wasn’t expected: the Club hosted a celebration of life, which was supposed to be in the great room only but spilled over into the lounge due to the number of people who came. Thank goodness we now have the Snug, where members can gather—as well, of course, in the taproom. Kudos to Allan and Jeannette for coming up with the Snug idea last year.

Coming Activities:
Wednesday, The Haviland Club Annual General Meeting, 7 PM
Just in case you missed the note above :).

Thursday Morning Coffee Club, 9:30 to 11:30 in the Lounge
Last week Bert shared photographs he’s unearthed of Esther Lowden’s daughter and her husband. A picture of Esther still eludes us, but Bert is working on it. Hank discussed plans for a February show at the Club. Come and share. Free snacks, cheap coffee and tea, good fun.

Friday November 10 – Friday Social. Bar opens at 4, Draws at 6.
Come out for happy hour and free munchies. Come or be missed!

Saturday, November 18 – Saturday Afternoon at the Races, 1:30 PM
Hank Stinson is hosting and arranging this new Club event, Saturday Afternoon at the Races. The plan is simple: we meet at the track before race time, for each race we each throw a toonie in a hat and draw a number, and the person with the winning number wins the pot. Meantime we laugh and tell jokes and lies and have a good time. Some are having lunch (at noon) while others may arrive for race time at 1:30. If interested, please just hit reply to this Newsletter in your emails and let us know, as we do need to know how many are coming.

Tuesday November 21, 7 PM – Book Club
Salman Rushdie’s The Golden House will be discussed by the Book Club this month. For December the club will read Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders, followed by Angie Thomas’s The Hate U Give in January.

Wednesday, November 22 – Paint and Pour, 7 PM
By popular demand, Paint and Pour with Cathy Butler will be returning November 22. Create your own masterpiece (as to our surprise we did last year!) Absolutely no experience or artistic talent is required to produce your own fine painting! $20 for Members, $30 for guests, includes all needed materials. Please let us know you plan to come by return email or let the bartender know, and pay at the bar.

Saturday, November 25, Bridge Fundraiser
Thanks to Irene and Jill for the upcoming bridge fundraiser, with all funds going to the Club. The Executive is looking to the next stage of improvements, and the money raised will be most appreciated.

Other Planned Activities:

Friday, December 15th, The Haviland Club Potluck Christmas Dinner

We hope everyone will mark December 15th in your calendar for a Club potluck Christmas dinner, a no-charge fun event for members and partners. Come spread the Christmas cheer. A sign up sheet is in the taproom so you can say what dish you plan to bring, or to sign up to be part of the clean-up team.

Volunteers Needed at New Year’s

As in previous years, the Club will open on New Years Eve, with munchies, the fires lit and music in the lounge. Folks will be invited to drop in on the way out or drop in and stay for the evening. The fireworks looked pretty cool from the belvedere last year!

Then, New Year’s Day is the levee. We are asking members if they could please bring sweets (Christmas leftovers are A-ok) the day before, or by 10 AM on New Years morning, and we would very much appreciate volunteers to serve and clean up. It’s a fun, busy time that passes in a flash, and your help would be very much appreciated.

If you wish anything to go out in the Newsletter, please email tricia.belfry@gmail.com.

Welcome New Members Judy Shaw and Phillipe and Karen Bruneau. (To our other fine applicants, your application has not yet been posted for the two weeks required to be approved by the board. Patience is required 🙂

Thanks to Terry and Calleen for their fabulous dinner last Friday. A great turnout, a great meal! A great night.

The Executive’s Liquor Committee is introducing new liquor pricing as of November 15, as prices have not been updated for some time. The following shows the new pricing. Please note that all prices shown here include HST, so a price of $8.00 is equivalent to $7.00 on the menu at a local restaurant or bar, where prices are before HST. Our prices are favourable when compared to other establishments in town, and the size of servings are almost universal. The new prices will be posted to clearly show this benefit of Club membership. New members, or those unfamiliar with the bartender, should self-identify to get the member price, as non-members will pay the non-member price in all situations.

Volunteers are still being sought to help Christine with painting.

Did you notice the new internal storm windows going in? We’re excited to have clean windows, windows painted outside, and more warmth in the house. Can’t wait to see the final product.

Wednesday Darts Night

Come on out tomorrow night to throw a few darts with your friends, tell a few stories and generally have a good time.

Thursday Morning Coffee Club, 9:30 to 11:30 in the Lounge

What a fascinating coffee club last Thursday, with Branwen Price, an engineer in training at Diavik Diamond Mines high in the arctic circle explaining how diamonds are mined in an environmentally sound (and very expensive) manner. Great stories included the finding of a 160 karat diamond, and a 6 foot trout that comes to visit. This week it’ll just be conversation, but it’s fun and we’d love to see you there.

Friday October 20 – Friday Social. Bar opens at 4, Draws at 6.

After a couple of $5 Fridays in a row, this week will be a simple social. Come or be missed!

Successful Summer run of  “Down With Demon Rum! Stories and Songs of Prohibition on PEI”

The Club would like to thank Hank and Rowena Stinson for the great show they put
on at the Haviland Club on late Sunday afternoon for the summer of 2017.

Thank you goes to the organizers, promotion and ticket sales, the cook(s), the volunteers who waited on tables and cleaned up after the show.

The audiences enjoyed songs, stories, humour and a fine Maritime dinner of local fish cakes, beans, and strawberry shortcake. Tales and music are suitable for all ages and families are welcome.

And what better venue than the historical Haviland Club! Built in 1869, the Haviland Club has been a social club since 1942, when officers of the Canadian Services purchased the building as a private place to gather during Prohibition, which ended in PEI in 1948. (Coincidence? Hardly!) The Club’s history will be provided to those interested, tours may be arranged, and the Club taproom will offer a full range of entirely legal beverages.

Each week our wonderful sponsor, Nessya of Nessya’s Gems and Jewels at 64 Queen Street in Charlottetown, will donate a wearable piece of art which some lucky guest will win. So come be an Islander for the evening (Island guests, please show the way). Make new friends, laugh, sing a little and enjoy a feed.

The Haviland Club is a not-for-profit organization.  Profits went to maintenance and upkeep of the heritage building, which is the ultimate purpose of all Club activities.

Member Activities

The group continues to finish quilts and planning their next activity.

For Thursday, October 19 Coffee Club will have a special guest, Branwen Price. Branwen is a Mining EIT (Engineer in Training) with the Surface mining department of Diavik, a diamond mining company. Branwen is currently working in NWT about 300km north of Yellowknife. If you’re interested in hearing about diamond mining in Canada, or diamonds in general, please join us.
