Coffee Club, Thursday Mornings 10:00 to 11:30 AM

On Thursday, a group of students from Study Abroad Language School will be joining us for coffee and conversation. This is part of a program to integrate newcomers into our community; as shown by the following announcement from Study Abroad Language School “The New Economic Integration Program at Study Abroad Language School gives newcomers to PEI more opportunities to connect with local businesses and community groups in order to help establish relationships and roots in the community.  As well as classroom instruction, students are challenged to step out of their cultural comfort zone and really become part of Island life.” The Club had a lot fun hosting a similar group last year. Please join us for an hour or so, for an interesting morning. Please Note: If schools are closed, coffee club is cancelled that day.

VegPEI Vegan Potluck Dinner, Monday, January 29, Doors Open at 6:30, Dinner at 7 (Public Event)

VegPEI welcomes members to join us the last Monday of every month for our fabulous vegan potluck. It’s strongly recommended that you bring a food item so there’s enough for everyone. If you’re new to vegan food—no worries! Just ensure the dish you bring doesn’t include animal flesh of any kind, dairy (cheese, milk, butter, etc.), eggs, gelatin or honey. If you bring a dish, please bring a list of ingredients that we can display. If you need more help or suggestions, don’t hesitate to contact us on our Facebook page. We also ask that everyone bring their own plates, bowls, utensils etc. Minimum donation is two dollars if you bring a dish; minimum donation is seven dollars if you do not bring a dish. You don’t need to be a vegan or vegetarian to come, just bring an open mind and an empty belly!

Drop Dead Gorgeous, Murder at the Bootleggers’ Valentines Bash, Saturday February 10, 7 PM (Public Event)

Did you get your persona yet? Get your ticket and for a night become a famous person—or a bad one! There’s no work for you to do, just come, have fun and help your team guess the killer. It’s the Bootleggers’ Valentines Bash at the top bootlegger’s in town, a joint called Drop Dead Gorgeous. Present this evening are bootleggers from across the Island, their henchmen, and prominent members of the Island community. There’s music, dancing and revelry…until things go horribly wrong. You’re part, should you be prepared to accept it, is to have fun, mingle, maybe dance a little, and play a role as you try to figure out whodunit—before someone else is killed! Get your ticket so that the organizing team can think up a truly heinous, or maybe just fun persona for you! This event is now open for public ticket purchases.

Bring and Buy (And Dine), February 16, 6 PM

Thanks to Carolyn for organizing this new Club fundraiser—and to Ray for offering to cook for 30 people!. $25 gets you a ticket for a turkey dinner with all the fixings, including desert and a glass of wine. Only 30 tickets will be sold! Those coming are asked to bring a new or very little used quality item, which will be auctioned off by auctioneer Alan Curly. Bring something, buy something: “Bring and Buy.”

Haviland Book Club, Tuesday February 20, 7 PM

The new books for February is A Gentleman in Moscow, by Amor Towles, and comes highly (highly!) recommended by our friend Cindy. We can’t wait to read it. For March the book is lighter fare, AMACAT, by New Brunswick author Chuck Bowie. Chuck presented a writer’s workshop recently at the Haviland Club and some met him there.

Lots of pictures in this Newsletter. We like that. Other things to mention:

Thanks again to those choosing to wear indoor shoes: Thanks to the bridge players and others who park their winter boots in the new shoe trays and wear indoor shoes in the Club. This simplifies cleanup and makes the Club safer, drier and homier for all.

Mentioning again that darts are postponed until spring: Organizer Frank is in warmer climes, so darts are not being organized. If anyone would like them to continue, please contact Mark (belfry.mark@gmail.com)

Window Proposal from InnerG one more time: Have you noticed how warm the Club is now? It’s because of the Innerg Interior Insulating Windows (www.innergwindows.com the Executive recently installed in most of the downstairs windows, eliminating heat loss and drafts and making the Club considerably more comfortable. Some members have been so impressed with the results that they’ve had these interior windows installed in their homes. Now, if members choose to purchase these windows for their homes, the Manufacturer has agreed to rebate 8% of the cost of the windows to The Haviland Club’s building repairs account!  You get increased comfort and cut your heating and cooling costs and the Club gets improvement money. For a quote or to learn more, contact Barry MacLean at 902-367-4601.

Still hoping for a Knife Sharpener: We didn’t find our knife sharpener yet; the Club’s knives are still dull. If you’re good at that, could you please let Tricia know, and come sharpen the Club’s key kitchen knives? BYOS (Bring Your Own Sharpener!)

Come to the Haviland Club, where membership counts!
