“Winter’s Come and Gone”- Samantha Scott & Tereza Tomek

The Haviland Club Newsletter, March 20, 2014

Welcome to the first day of spring. And you thought the universe didn’t have a sense of humour…

Here’s what’s going on in the warmest place in the city:

TOMORROW NIGHT, FRIDAY MARCH 21 is another fun, Friday social, (draws are getting big, though) BUT…

At 5:30 TOMORROW, THE HAVILAND CATCH CLUB. The group that fills the second floor with magical musical rounds every other Friday is meeting again this week. Everyone welcome; the ability to read music is helpful but not essential. The theme this week is Spring.

AND THEN at 8 PM, TOMORROW – Singer/songwriter and Wednesday evening guest Katie McGarry will launch her new album Waiting On with her band. Katie says her new CD “provides a satisfying serving of sweet vocals, tasty country licks and contemplative lyrics” that help justify the description of her music as timeless.” What is it about that description that just sounds delicious? Dylan Menzie will open the show with an acoustic set.

Hey, have you seen the Great Room? Paint done, drapes soon, stay tuned! And what’s that painting going on in the hall? Hey, Lennie, what y’up to?

SUNDAY BLUES JAM AT THE HAVILAND CLUB continues at 4 PM (Sunday, but you probably guessed). With member and public support, the Blues Jam continues to make a mark for itself in the Haviland calendar – and  blow some great Blues. Come out and be part of an exciting, growing scene.

MONDAY NIGHT, CLASSIC COUNTRY AT THE HAV, starting at 7 PM. First set by Nudie, when he’s not in Nashville or some other musical centre, followed by music from Wally Young and the boys, with a remarkable stream of fine, musical guests. We mean like, really. Blow you away good. Without doubt, this is the hottest country ticket in town, and by donation!

MONDAY NIGHT GUITAR LESSONS continue, with Jon Rehder each Monday at 6:30 PM. Only $10 for members and $20 for visitors/guests, and a group of new friends finding their way together.

WEDNESDAY EVENING AT THE HAV, WITH JON REHDER is postponed this week for a private function.

Next meeting of the Book Club at the Wine Bar is April 22, 7 PM. The Rosie Project is the next book. Check out this fun, well-written book – and come share in the discussion next month.

See you, my friends, at your Hav!

The Haviland Club Newsletter, March 13, 2014

The weather today reminds us of that great Canadian song by Bowser and Blue – remember them? ‘We’re Canadians,’ they said, ”We’re all here – ’cause we’re not all there!’

Well, we say, as long as we’re all here together, what more do we need?

A big THANK YOU to everyone involved in the renewal of the Great Room – to Louise and Lenny, who have done the bulk of the work, plus to Jamie and Kerry and Bobby and Mark who pitched in, and to Gloria, who’s been cleaning up the daily mess. The Great Room is going to look Tony the Tiger Grrrrreat!

TOMORROW NIGHT, FRIDAY MARCH 14 is a $5 Friday, courtesy of Stacey. Stuffed pork, roast potatoes, fabulous desert. All for the best $5 you’ll spend for the next two weeks (until the next $5Fri).

Saturday March 15, 8 PM Fundraiser for Jamie Doucette, arranged by Melissa.  Jamie, the son of chef and recent member Joanne Coles,  recently suffered a brain aneurysm and underwent  surgery while studying in Boston. He spent 3 weeks in hospital, and now requires 24 hour supervision. His memory and thought process have been affected, and he has a long road ahead of him, including many tests and doctor visits. It is all very costly, and his plan doesn’t cover everything. Admission is by donation at the door.

SUNDAY, BLUES JAM AT THE HAVILAND CLUB, 4 PM – 7 PM with the Hunter Gibson Band. There’s discussion about whether Sunday is the right day for this event – we’d love you to come by, listen to some incredible music, and give us your opinion.

THIS MONDAY NIGHT being St. Patrick’s Day, come out to COUNTRY IRISH FUSION AT THE HAVILAND, WITH SURPRISE GUESTS, 7PM  in the lounge. Last week there were so many musicians, the guitar cases were lined up down the hall and through the kitchen. These are some of the best Island country and crossover musicians – come see.

MONDAY NIGHT GUITAR LESSONS with Jon Rehder each Monday at 6:30 PM. Only $10 for members and $20 for visitors/guests.

On Tuesday this week, the Book Club at the Wine Bar selected The Rosie Project as the next read. Check out this fun, well-written book – and come share in the discussion next month: April 22, 7 PM in the library.

WEDNESDAY EVENING AT THE HAV, WITH JON REHDER. 8PM.Come here our favourite musician, Jon Rehder, work his magic with current and upcoming stars. Jon’s guest for Monday March 19 is a the very talented Morgan Hill. You may have seen this handsome young man with his long blonde hair around the club, as he comes in on Monday evenings to work with Jon.

See you at your Hav! (Winner so far of our ‘What’s the best slogan’ query.)

The Haviland Club Newsletter, March 6, 2014

Spring is a time of renewal, and next week a fine group of member volunteers are going to fix cracks in the walls of the Great Room, then repaint. Shortly afterwards new drapes will be installed.

TOMORROW is a Friday social. Come on out for a good time with your friends.

The Haviland Catch Club is meeting this Friday, March 7 at 5:30pm up in the Boardroom. The theme for this Friday is Latin rounds.  They are for the most part sacred rounds but there is a drinking round with Alleluia in it.  All the rounds are from Thomas Ravenscroft.  We are revisiting Celebrons sans Cesse from an earlier meeting which is really a piece by Orlando di Lassus – Musica est dei donum optimi.

SATURDAY EVENING (March 8) – BEACH PARTY!!!

Who’s tired of the cold?  If you’re not somewhere warm and sunny right now, you NEED a break from the cold and snow and wind…. did we mention cold?  Sunny music, snacks and as always great company. Come down to dance the night away and forget the winter for a while. Free for members, $5 for guests.

SUNDAY, BLUES JAM AT THE HAVILAND CLUB, 4 PM – 7 PM with the Hunter Gibson Band. Full house, every week – come and enjoy!

MONDAY NIGHT CLASSIC COUNTRY JAM (7PM),  in the lounge. Top Island country musicians performing the very best of classic country. Great music, good friends.

MONDAY NIGHT GUITAR LESSONS with Jon Rehder each Monday at 6:30 PM. Only $10 for members and $20 for visitors/guests.

TUESDAY NIGHT, THE BOOK CLUB AT THE WINE BAR. Time to pick our new  book. The group is growing, but the more the merrier. New members welcome!

Poetry readings – Open Mic – at the Club are taking a March holiday. Back in April.

WEDNESDAY EVENING AT THE HAV, WITH JON REHDER. 8PM. Oh what a great show this week – and next, too. Come here Jon work his magic with

current and upcoming stars. Upcoming guests are:

March 12, Ian Wigmore (Hey, looking forward to it)

March 19, Morgan Hill (great young talent – you’re going to love it).

Next Friday – $5 Friday, courtesy of Stacey MacDonald. Stuffed pork, roast potatoes, fabulous desert. Served with a smile. We’ll remind you next week, but don’t forget!

And then, next Saturday (March 15) 8 PM come out for a Fundraiser for Jamie Doucette, arranged by Melissa Piccioni. The benefit at the club on March 15 will help with some of the expenses for Jamie, his girlfriend Julie and their families. The event will include a silent auction, and 50/50 draw. Admission is by donation at the door.

Okay, which do you like better? Let Pres. Mark know:

See you at your Club! or,

See you at the Hav!

Either way, we’ll see you soon at our favourite third place.

Oh, and don’t forget to turn your clocks forward when you go to bed Saturday. It’s that time of year (like, SPRING!!!)

The Haviland Club Newsletter, February 27, 2014

Outdoors, PEI is suffering through what Boomer calls a ‘freeze and thaw seesaw’, a proverbial pothole-maker. But here at the Club it’s all warmth and smooth sailing.

TOMORROW, FRIDAY FEBRUARY 28: $5 Friday, featuring “Lazy” cabbage rolls, home made biscuits and desert, care of Gloria, Jeanette and Barb. Guaranteed to be the best, home-made, value-priced, among-friends meal in town. Come by 5-ish if you can. Draws are at 6, dinner shortly after.

Every Friday Night in the boardroom at 5:30 the Haviland Club makes beautiful choral music in the spirit of Elizabethan England – and you’re welcome to be part of it. Give it a listen! Better yet, lend your voice – because, you know, together we can make beautiful music!

AND…FRIDAY NIGHT, STARTING AT 7 PM, RED CROSS FUNDRAISING CONCERT BY THE BAND ROUTE 21, with support from EMERALD JUNCTION (Ron Kelly and Anne Quinn).  Entrance by donation to the Red Cross. A donation box will be available earlier in the evening, so members may donate if they wish.

No Club activities Saturday Night, as the Club is rented.. The bar will be open for members 7 – 10 PM.

SUNDAY, BLUES JAM AT THE HAVILAND CLUB, 4 PM – 6 PM with the Hunter Gibson Band. This week’s guest is the Spencer Soloduka Band. You might have seen this remarkable young group the night they joined Jon Rehder – if not, believe us, they are talented, original, a great addition. And, once again, chef Wes Gallant will be cooking up tasty treats.

And then after the Blues Jam, SUNDAY AT 7, Come out for THE IMAC OSCAR-PALOOZA. This is not a Club event, but Club members are welcome, and tickets are only $10. Why watch the Oscars alone, when you could: Dress like the movie star you really are, win prizes, and just have a plain old good time, filling the spaces between (and during) long thank you speeches with brilliant repartee of you own! There’s even a red carpet; who could resist?

MONDAY NIGHT CLASSIC COUNTRY JAM (7PM),  in the lounge. This show is a great draw; top Island country musicians performing the very best of classic country – and this week Margie and Leona Carmichael will also perform. Great music, good friends, and now great food from chef Wes Gallant.

MONDAY NIGHT GUITAR LESSONS with Jon Rehder each Monday at 6:30 PM. C’mon, why are you being shy? There are half a dozen participants, from beginner to ‘way better than I am’. But you’re missing! Why is that? Only $10 for members and $20 for visitors/guests.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT, WEDNESDAY EVENING AT THE HAV, WITH JON REHDER. 8PM. Next week Jon is joined by one of the Island’s brightest stars, Catherine MacLellan, and that’s always magical. Here’s the coming lineup:

March 5, Catherine MacLellan (always a great show & a full house)

March 12, Ian Wigmore (Hey, looking forward to it)

March 19, Morgan Hill (great young talent – you’re going to love it).

THE BOOK CLUB AT THE WINE BAR, is reading Notes From A Small Island, by Bill Bryson. So funny in places it should be read in private, or among close friends. Next meeting March 11 to discuss and pick a new book.

We’re trying a new selection of wines, only $6.50 (tax included) for members, which is a great deal for good wine (unless you live in France, which we don’t). Wine drinkers: try them out, and let us know what you think.

See you at your Club – where you always ‘Hav’ a great time!

The Haviland Club Newsletter, February 20, 2014

We thought we’d begin with this great picture of PEI’s golden girl. Remember the stories from years ago about people taking their own toilet paper to Russia? Well, guess not that much has changed – Olympians need to find their own bath tubs to get the aches out. And apparently it works!

Hey, how about a huge thanks to the group that planned and delivered this week’s bridge luncheon. Thanks to Teresa McCabe for organizing the event, and to Lenny Hynes, Ray Malone, Norma Lee Storey, Dianne McKay, Evelyn Dover, Joanne Stevens,  Jeanette Doucette, Tricia and Mark Belfry, Al Cummings, Norman Carruthers – and we probably missed someone, sorry – for the contribution to the renovation fund. Curtains are bought, paint is picked, and more to come. Thank YOU!

Oh, and did everyone notice Lenny Hynes painting, and the pictures he hung in the right hand room in the basement. Thanks, Lenny. Looks great.

TOMORROW, Social Friday. You know these foodless Fridays are always fun. See you there.

While you’re there, tomorrow night, enjoy a sing-a-long in the spirit of Elizabethan England beginning at 5:30 PM in the boardroom. With tankard of ale in hand, join in singing rounds from the likes of Purcell, Ravenscroft and other Renaissance and Baroque composers.  We look at new songs every session so being able to read music is helpful.  Seriously, the music is gorgeous – and you help make it. Is this not a remarkable Club?

ALSO TOMORROW NIGHT: PEI HEAVEN ON EARTH EXTRAVAGANZA FOR ANDERSON HOUSE, 7:15 – 10:30. THIS IS GOING TO BE A TRULY GREAT EVENING FOR A TRULY GREAT CAUSE! Hosted by the charmingly bewitching (notice how we switched those adjectives around? Just checking too see if you’re paying attention) Amanda Rae Gallant, and described as a night of great music, terrific food, lots of laughter, and a silent auction in support of Anderson House. Each ticket is a handmade piece of art! Tickets are $20 and available at the bar and Timothy’s. Heck, we like Amanda so much we’re including her picture. This Newsletter is just filled with pictures of remarkable women!

If you have been too busy, or something else has prevented you rejoining, just want to let you know, we’ll be glad to see you back at the Club.
