THE HAVILAND CLUB NEWSLETTER, January 16, 2018

THE HAVILAND CLUB NEWSLETTER

January 16, 2018

This is a Newsletter to the Members of the Haviland Club.

All activities pertain to member-only activities unless otherwise indicated.

We are accepting new members. If interested, please contact thehavilandclub@gmail.com.

Thanks to those choosing to wear indoor shoes: Thanks to the bridge players and others who park their winter boots in the new shoe trays and wear indoor shoes in the Club. This simplifies cleanup and makes the Club safer, drier and homier for all.

More Information on the Murder Mystery, Drop Dead Gorgeous!, February 10, 7 PM:

  • Tickets are $10 for members, $20 for non-Members, and available at the bar.
  • We hope members will come out, so tickets will not be sold to non-members until this coming Saturday, and posters will go up after that (thanks, Jill, for the suggestion).
  • Don’t worry about being required to do anything but mingle and have fun! Just come party. It’ll be more fun if you pretend to be the persona you’ve been given, but it doesn’t mean acting in front of anyone. Only one or two people (other than the organizing committee) will be asked to say or do certain things, and they will know and agree to it beforehand.
  • This murder mystery is like a game; the purpose is to have fun and ‘sherlock’ out the murderer before s/he’s announced.
  • Please do get your tickets ahead of time, as there is a lot of prep work to be done.

And thanks, Giovanni. More than fifty people came to dine on Giovanni’s spaghetti and sweets last Friday night. Thanks, Giovanni, and your helpers (especially Bruce and Pat for the cleanup), for such a wonderful meal. Did you know that Giovanni is offering Italian lessons (Ciao! Italian Conversation with Giovanni, $250 for 8 weeks/16 lessons) at the Club on Tuesday and Thursday evenings? If interested, contact Giovanni at 902-916-3522.

Bye the way, the Club knives are in need of an expert sharpener. If you’re good at that, could you please let Tricia know, and come sharpen the Club’s key kitchen knives? BYOS (Bring Your Own Sharpener!)

Coming Activities: (All events are for members and their guests only unless “Public Event” is indicated.)

TODAY—Book Club, Tuesday January 16, 7 PM

Tonight we’re discussing Angie Thomas’s The Hate U Give and perhaps also Lincoln on the Bardo by George Saunders. Come join a fascinating, insightful conversation, and to help pick the next reads.

Craft Club, Wednesday Evenings, 7 PM

Come for the conversation, the activity, the production.

Inspirational Writing Circle, Wednesday Evenings, 7 PM
Starts with an idea, a blank screen or sheet of paper.

Writers, and those interested in writing, this is a great forum to develop ideas, talk narrative arcs and other writing techniques. Membership is required, but non-members are more than welcome to come participate two or three times to see if Haviland Club Membership is in their future, as it should be!

Coffee Club, Thursday Mornings 10:00 to 11:30 AM

More discussion last week on the history of the Haviland Club and the west side of Charlottetown. Did you know that the wrought iron fence around the property at Grafton and Rochford Streets originally fenced the Haviland Club—or the US Consulate when it resided here? Isn’t that cool? There’s always a fun conversation, with different people dropping in each week. The Remarkable Esther Lowden story

Please Note: If schools are closed, coffee club is cancelled that day.

Friday Social!, Friday, January 19, Bar opens at 4, draws at 6.

It’s a Friday social this week at the Haviland Club, with nibbles and happy hour prices. New members—Friday evenings are a great time to come meet other members. Best to come by 5:30 or earlier, as its busiest 5:30 to 7.

Robbie Burrrrrns Scotch Tasting, January 26, 7 PM

VegPEI Vegan Potluck Dinner, Monday, January 29, Doors Open at 6:30, Dinner at 7 (Public Event)

VegPEI welcomes members to join us the last Monday of every month for our fabulous vegan potluck. It’s strongly recommended that you bring a food item so there’s enough for everyone. If you’re new to vegan food—no worries! Just ensure the dish you bring doesn’t include animal flesh of any kind, dairy (cheese, milk, butter, etc.), eggs, gelatin or honey. If you bring a dish, please bring a list of ingredients that we can display. If you need more help or suggestions, don’t hesitate to contact us on our Facebook page. We also ask that everyone bring their own plates, bowls, utensils etc. Minimum donation is two dollars if you bring a dish; minimum donation is seven dollars if you do not bring a dish. You don’t need to be a vegan or vegetarian to come, just bring an open mind and an empty belly!

Paint and Pour III, Wednesday, January 31, 7 PM (Public Event)

The popular Haviland Club Paint and Pour featuring instructor Cathy Butler returns again. If you haven’t painted before, come surprise yourself. You’ll be amazed what you can accomplish under Cathy’s tutelage. If you’ve painted before, come hone your skills! Although not yet decided, nice summery seascapes may be at least part of the artistic model. Members $20 (including all supplies); Non-Members $30. Tickets are available at the bar.

Saturday February 10, 7 PM—Murder Mystery! (Public Event)

It’s the Bootleggers’ Valentines Bash at the top bootlegger’s in town, a joint called Drop Dead Gorgeous. Present this evening are bootleggers from across the Island, their henchmen, and prominent members of the Island community. There’s live music, dancing and revelry…until things go horribly wrong. You’re part, should you be prepared to accept it, is to have fun, mingle, maybe dance a little, and play a role as you try to figure out whodunit—before someone else is killed! If you haven’t told Hank, Cathy or Mark you’re interested, please do, so the organizing team can think up a truly heinous, or maybe just fun persona for you!

Reconfirming the Window Proposal from InnerG: Have you noticed how warm the Club is now? It’s because of the Innerg Interior Insulating Windows (www.innergwindows.com the Executive recently installed in most of the downstairs windows, eliminating heat loss and drafts and making the Club considerably more comfortable. Some members have been so impressed with the results that they’ve had these interior windows installed in their homes. Now, if members choose to purchase these windows for their homes, the Manufacturer has agreed to rebate 8% of the cost of the windows to The Haviland Club’s building repairs account!  You get increased comfort and cut your heating and cooling costs and the Club gets improvement money. For a quote or to learn more, contact Barry MacLean at 902-367-4601.
