Hello, Haviland Club Members, we thought you could use a Newsletter!

Hi there. We wanted to stay in touch. After all, we’re all still here, even if we’re not all there, if you know what we mean.

We hope to see you soon, once the curve is flattened, and that it happens soon—although, you know how hard it can be to flatten our curves…

Read down, we’ve included a joke, but first, we wanted to thank some people and suggest virtual clubbing.

And remember, we are family. If you need anything and can’t get out, let the Club know. There are people to help!

Thanks to Sue S for organizing, and performing as part of, the music of Lucy Blu the last Friday evening we were together. Lucy and band were a delight, and Sue, thanks!

And Thanks to those who organized the Easter Seal Campaign Bridge Fundraiser, and since we have a picture we’d like to show it. Member Jake B, organizer of the event, is seen below with Carol of the Happy Bidders Bridge Club. Missing is Irene MacArthur of the Over the Bridge Club—both bridge Clubs, of course, call the Haviland Club home.

Now What About Virtual Clubbing?

There are some Club activities, like the book club and play reading, that could be done through What’s App (max 4 people) or Zoom (lots of people but maximum 40 minutes for the free version) and we ask Barbara and Robin to consider those options.

The Book Club

The Haviland Club Book Club is reading the fascinating social sci-fi novel Nostalgia, by M.G. Vassjani, a fascinating tale of the challenges of longevity. The group could chat through Zoom, it would require only downloading the app.

The Play Reading Group

The Play Reading Group finished Chekhov’s “The Boor,” and were planning to expand to a longer play, “Barefoot in Athens,” about Socrates last days. Would people be interested in doing this on line?

And Finally—An Update on COVID-19 in the UK and Australia

This joke from member—and Chaz, sorry for the edit. As you know, we Canadians apologize a lot, but that doesn’t mean we LIKE doing it! So we took out some of the less flattering stereotypes, funny though they were.

We hear the English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent virus threat. They’ve raised their threat level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.” Soon, though, level may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or even “A Bit Cross.” The English have not been “A Bit Cross” since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out.
The virus has been re-categorized from “Tiresome” to “A Bloody Nuisance.” The last time the British issued a “Bloody Nuisance” warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from “Pissed Off” to “Let’s Get the Bastard.” They don’t have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

Australia, meanwhile, has raised its alert level from “No worries” to “She’ll be alright, Mate.” Two more escalation levels remain: “Crikey! I think we’ll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!” and “The barbie is cancelled.” So far, no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level.

Oh, and the Russians say, “Its not us. We only spread viruses on line.”

TONIGHT: TUESDAY March 10, The Haviland Club Book Club, 7 PM

With schedules during March, meeting was not possible on the 3rd Tuesday, so the group will meet on the second Tuesday, March 10. With the shorter turn-around time, the group decided on a shorter book than Nostalgia, and will go with Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. (If you’ve been thinking of attending and haven’t, new members are always welcome. We love to hear what you think!)

THURSDAY: Coffee and Conversation, 10 –11:30 AM (Public)

This week: our guest is Vaeda Matheson, the 2020 Easter Seals Ambassador. Join us on Thursday to meet this interesting young lady.
NOTE: the lounge and great room are not available to us on this Thursday, so we will meet upstairs in the room to the right at the head of the stairs.
Next week Tami McIntyre. Tami was the street navigator last year and is now with Bedford-McDonald House.
And remember, if schools are closed on Thursday because of the weather (heaven forbid!), Coffee and Conversation is cancelled.

FRIDAY the 13th: Friday Social with MUSIC BY LUCY BLU – Bar Opens at 4, Draws at 6, Music 6:15

Gather ‘round people, Friday the 13th—come fro the Friday social this week with Lucy Blu providing musical entertainment from 6:15 to 7:30. Originally from BC, Lucy Blu has travelled East making the very beautiful and musical PEI her home. With the opportunity to join new talented musicians, she is continuing her dream of showcasing many of her original songs along with some tasteful cover music. She has opened for some amazing talents such as; Alfie Zappacosta, Blues sensation David Gogo, Karen Lee Baton, Paul Laine and Germany’s Alice Francis. Lucy’s song, ‘(You’ve Got To) Give Your Love To Me’ was played on CBC RADIO as a Valentine’s Day feature and lead into for CBC Searchlight.

SATURDAY, March 14: Easter Seals Bridge Fundraiser, 1-3 PM (Public Event)

Mark your March entertainment and dining calendar entry in ink, not pencil, for March 21st at 6pm at The Haviland Club, when the Haviland Club presents “Michelangelo’s Masterpiece – or – Talk of the Town.” You can decide the most fitting title after you see the show. A delectable, Italian-inspired menu from Green Island Catering will be enveloped in a fun, music-filled escapade in the piazza at Poggibonsi. Michelangelo will tell you all about the colourful characters.

Dinner and a show on a Saturday night for $50!! The menu? Ricotta Arancini Croquette with Micro Greens, Roasted Chicken Breast and Drumstick Lollipop, Cheese Tortellini, Truffle Potatoes, Carrots and Kale, and Tiramisu for dessert. If you can’t make dinner, how about just the show on Friday night? $20 at 7 pm. Tell your friends! Tickets available at the bar. Buongiorno!

TUESDAY April 14, The Haviland Club Play Reading Group, 7:30 PM

The Haviland Readers Theatre met on March 9 and read Anton Chekhov’s short comedy “The Boor.” Chekhov’s plays were a staple of The Moscow Art Theatre where Konstantin Stanislavsky taught ’The Method’, the acting style still preferred in theatre schools today. “The Boor,” set in pre-Revolution Russia, was a good demonstration of nineteenth-century dramatic styles in transition to the sort of realism that characterizes most twentieth-century drama. At the meeting, two things were decided. First of all, Tuesday would be a better night to meet since the Haviland is usually dark on Monday. So, our next meeting will be on April 14, at the Haviland at 7:30 PM. Second, it was felt that we should try a longer work. Maxwell Anderson’s Barefoot in Athens, a play that dramatizes the last few days of Socrates’ life, was selected. This play has a fairly large cast, so if you would like to join us, you would be most welcome! Get in touch with Robin Carson for a copy of the script. Contact Robin Carson at rscarson@icloud.com

Heavy PEI Eggs?

Did you know… (Doug, did you know this?) In 1867 egg exports from Charlottetown amounted to 156,000 dozen (almost 2 million eggs!), almost all bound for the Boston market. Many went by steamer but most were sent by rail via New Brunswick. In 1874 the New England Farmer noted that eggs from Prince Edward Island weighed thirty per cent more than other eggs! The following year the Boston Globe reported that a recent steamer cargo included five million eggs from Prince Edward Island in a single shipment. We won’t tell you how that worked out, something about tariffs, but it was good for PEI while it lasted, which was through the years our house was built. Did the Lowden fleet carry eggs? Almost certainly!
