Member David MacKay, with Joscelynne Bordeaux and friends, is presenting a preview of their new show, “The Montgomerys, A Tribute to Maud Montgomery in word and song. LM Montgomery, better known to her friends as Maud, until the 1950s was the most famous novelist in Canada and some say in the world, selling hundreds of thousands of her books in various languages internationally. Over the past months David and Joscelynne have been  adapting some of the poetry of Maud Montgomery to music as well as developing songs in celebration of her life and work. Add this free spectacle to your Friday fun!

Robbie Burns Scotch Tasting, Friday February 7, 7 PM

Play Reading Group Monday February 10, 7:30 PM

The Haviland Readers Theatre will meet again at 7:30 PM on Monday, February 10 at the Haviland Club. We’ll be reading “Still Stands the House” by Gwen Pharis Ringwood, and (we hope!) “The Lesson” by Eugène Ionesco, with a discussion of both. Last week we read “Aria da Capo” by Edna St.Vincent Millay, a darkly humoured commentary on territorial divisions and human indifference. Though the play was first staged in 1920, it provides a remarkably contemporary thrust at present-day politics (e.g., The Wall!) Though the purpose of our Readers Theatre is just to enjoy reading the texts we choose, discussion afterwards is a lot of fun!

We would love to have you join our Play Reading Group! And, and this is important, if you plan to attend, please contact Robin email at  to be sent the material, as we distribute scripts by email. At the next meeting we will also be discussing plans for moving forward including the number of meetings in a month, script selection, reading ‘cold’ vs. polishing a presentation, and the mechanics of finding and distributing scripts. Remember, please contact Robin for scripts if you would like to join us (and we hope you do!)

The Haviland Club Book Club, Tuesday February 18, 7 PM

Having enjoyed the Other Side of the Sun by Island author Thien Tang, for February, the book Club is reading one of the all time classics of Canadian literature, Fifth Business, by Robertson Davies. Coming up, Nostalgia,  by M G Vassanji. Join the conversation!

HOUSE COMMITTEE UPDATE AS WE GEAR UP FOR 2020

The House Committee is busy with activities to address maintenance repairs, and we are also developing plans for freshening up the club’s rooms and furnishings. Please bear with us as we work with the Paul Davis contracting crew to find and permanently fix the on-going problem we have experienced with water leakage from the bay window area of the lounge. We anticipate that this problem should be fully resolved in the coming weeks. We have also solicited bids from several companies for snow removal from the front and rear entry walkways, stairs, and mobility ramp, and are happy to announce that Earthform Landscape Professionals was the successful bidder. We will be seeking a bid from them for lawn mowing services in the warm weather months.

Mark Hansen of Red Clay Construction, a certified Wood Energy Technology Transfer (WETT) inspector, will be coming to the Haviland Club on February 3, 2020, to perform the WETT inspection that was advised in our 2019 building inspection report. While a typical building inspection includes a visual inspection of the fireplace, chimney and hearth, a WETT specialty inspection conducted by a certified inspector includes an inspection of all the elements of any wood burning technologies in the home to make sure that they are installed correctly and are installed with compliance to building codes and regulations. It should also include a visit to the roof to examine the chimney for any potential structural or ventilation issues. Mr. Hansen will also clean the fireplaces chimneys that are currently in use. The last chimney cleaning occurred in 2018. In light of the upcoming WETT inspection, we ask that members refrain from building fires in the lounge or great room fireplaces until after the WETT inspection has been made and the accompanying report issued. As the need for this inspection was documented in our 2019 building report, it is important that we not expose ourselves to insurance liability issues by using the fireplaces until after the inspection report confirms that they are in good, working order.

In the coming months we hope to continue with room renovation efforts for several of the second floor rooms. Upgrades to the current flooring is badly needed in a number of the rooms, and we will slowly work towards replacing furniture items that are in a degraded condition. Improvements and upgrades to the club’s first and second floor rooms will serve as an important support to ongoing efforts to increase membership and rental revenues. We will also be investigating provincial energy saving programs for which we may qualify. There is currently a provincially supported rebate program available for installing mini-splits (an interior energy efficient heating/air conditioning unit that works with an exterior compressor). We plan to have an evaluation made on whether such a system would be suitable and economical for the club.

Fundraising projects to build a House Committee budget for addressing the ongoing maintenance costs for the Haviland Club are already underway, and we will be updating members on those planned activities in the coming months.

New Years Eve Drop In:  As in the past, the Haviland Club will be open on New Years Eve. Members and guests are invited to drop in and spend some time with fellow members and friends enjoying the warmth and convivial beauty of our club.

New Years Day Levee: The New Year’s Levee will take place 11 to 1 PM on New Year’s Day. It’s fun to see so many people in the Club; we hope you’ll come and spend some time enjoying the sight, and we very much hope that you’ll consider making up a tray of sweets to satisfy the hungry hoards and perhaps helping out with the serving. Please help out. We like to put on the best of shows, and as with everything else at the Club, you’re part of it.

Entertainment Committee Request If members have an event or idea that they would like to see happen at the Club please feel free to bring it forward to the manager or the social committee and let’s try and make it happen. Let’s work together to make this the best season yet. Your Social/Committee consists of Sue Stanger (Chair), Julie Charlebois, Marie Hunt and Cathy Butler.

Library: Our Library is growing month by month. New Titles arrive all the times. Have you had a look lately? This week 5 news books on various topics have been added, including a complete biography of Maud Lewis, the famous Canadian Maritime painter.  An attractive feature is that most of our books are new or newish and in good condition. Our catalogue of available books is online at Libib, under Haviland Club Library. Enjoy!
