Congratulations to Doug Thompson on his election to Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Haviland Club. Doug is a highly respected member of the Club and a former Vice-President. Thanks also to Bert for taking a lead role in the interim.

A Huge Thanks to Julie for producing the Club Newsletter the last couple of months. It’s a great deal of work on top of a full-time job, and you did a great job. Thanks, Julie.

A Great Big Thanks to Cathy B for stepping up to provide chili for last Friday’s $7 Friday, as Marie was unfortunately ill. Thanks also to Tricia for helping, and for those who cleaned up.

And Another Massive Thanks to Carol Reid for her donation of 50% of the cost of a stone mason—and negotiating the discount rate—for repairs of the pink Sicilian marble fireplace in the Parlour and the white fireplace in the Snug, which was coming apart. Both fireplaces look so much better, and we understand the crack in the Library fireplace will also be repaired.

Time to View the Wonderful Woodhouse Christmas Display.

19 Campbell Road, Johnston’s River, Sunday to Thursday 5–10pm. Friday and Saturdays 5-11 Members Gary and Terry invite you to come and be a part of their 7th season. Bring the family and enjoy the show free of charge but donations in aid of Santa’s Angels are gratefully accepted. (Santa’s Angels is a 100% volunteer-based group that provides a surprise Christmas morning to families across the Island (so donations are much needed!) For more details visit: https://www.facebook.com/Garyslightshow

Piano Tuned Thanks to pianist Max Keenleyside for tuning the piano in the Great Room so that pianist Sarah Hagen could launch of her new CD. There was lots of Media presence at the launch. (P.S. Max says we have an excellent piano.)

About Surnames A note on the use of surnames in this Newsletter. As the Newsletter is published on Facebook and the web to help stimulate interest and membership, surnames are not used unless in formal situations, such as elections. This informal policy but deemed wise by Newsletter staff but could be changed at the direction of the Executive.

Friday Social This Week—Bar Opens at 4, Draws at 6

We’ll miss you if we don’t see you—so see you Friday!

Coffee and Conversation, Thursday December 5, 10 –11:30 AM

This week, our guest, Jennifer Evans, is unable to join us; but has agreed to join us on January 16th. Please drop in on Thursday for coffee and conversation—including suggestions for the program in 2020. Hey, we’re interesting too, right?

Last week, on Thursday Nov 28th, we had an honoured guest, Grace Nicholson. Grace was one of the first ladies to join the Haviland Club. Vice President Jamie Trainor welcomed Grace, and announced that Grace would be an Honorary Member of the Club, with her name on the board, along with Her Honour Antoinette Perry and  His Worship Philip Brown. There were 35 people present to express best wishes to Grace, and her daughter, Martha.

Next week will be the last meeting for 2019. Join us for spiced cider, Christmas cake, and maybe more!!! Bert C welcomes any suggestions for our program in the new year. Please let him, Tim or Susan know of your suggestions.

And please note (and do we hate having to say this!): If schools are closed because of the weather, then Thursday morning coffee is also cancelled.

Play Reading! Group Monday December 9, 7:30 PM

If this interests you, please come to an organizational meeting at the Haviland Club to decide on the details and pick a snazzier name! If you have questions, email Robin at rscarson@icloud.com or call 902-892-3373. But hey, come! It’ll be fun.

The Haviland Club Book Club, Tuesday December 17, 7 PM

This month your Book Club is reading The Other Side of the Sun, an immigrant’s fascinating tale by Island writer Thien Tang. This will be followed by The Big Green Tent: A Novel, by Ludmila Ulitskaya; Fifth Business, by Robertson Davies; and Nostalgia,  by M G Vassanji. Join the conversation!

Speaking of Books, Our Library is growing month by month. New Titles arrive all the times. Have you had a look lately? This week 5 news books on various topics have been added, including a complete biography of Maud Lewis, the famous Canadian Maritime painter.  An attractive feature is that most of our books are new or newish and in good condition. Our catalogue of available books is online at Libib, under Haviland Club Library. Enjoy!

Christmas Potluck and Social – Friday December 20th

Come and join us for our Christmas Pot Luck and Social! Please bring your favourite dish, enjoy music with Musical Sue, wear your favourite Christmas garb, and help celebrate the Christmas season with your fellow Club members. New Years Day Levee: The New Year’s Levee will take place 11 to 1 PM on New Year’s Day. It’s fun to see so many people in the Club; we hope you’ll come and spend some time enjoying the sight, and we very much hope that you’ll consider making up a tray of sweets to satisfy the hungry hoards and perhaps helping out with the serving. Please help out. We like to put on the best of shows, and as with everything else at the Club, you’re part of it.

“The idea for a Crossing Over series came from the desire to explore genre transition,” explains PEI Writers’ Guild president Mo Duffy Cobb. “Over the next few months, the Guild will host workshops in screenwriting, playwriting, and songwriting—exploring the techniques of writing in each genre.”

PEI Writers’ Guide to offer Screenwriting 101 workshop at the Haviland Club

PEI Writers’ Guide to offer Screenwriting 101 workshop

On November 23, the PEI Writers’ Guild will host a screenwriting workshop, the first of a new “Crossing Over” series the Guild is hosting this year. Entitled “Screenwriting 101,” the workshop will be facilitated by Louise Lalonde of Louise Lalonde Productions, a Prince Edward Island media company.

Duffy Cobb said the workshops will appeal to those who wish to break into a particular genre, but who may not be familiar with genre-specific writing conventions. “There might be those who’ve written a novel or poetry and who have a desire to try screenwriting, but who aren’t familiar with the format or criteria required.” But Duffy Cobb also stresses that you do not need to be an experienced writer to participate in these workshops.

In Screenwriting 101, Lalonde will guide participants through the screenwriting process, from creating a draft to making it ready for market. Participants will learn the difference between novel writing and writing a screenplay; the criteria used to ensure an idea is strong enough to carry a whole movie, series, mini-series, short film or feature film; how to tell a visual, emotional, and surprising story for screens; an overview on various screenwriting programs and their functions; and the use of dialogue for exposition.

Participants will also learn about funding opportunities for screenwriters, something Lalonde knows all too well as a familiar face at FilmPEI. She is the program coordinator of the popular PEI Screenwriters’ Bootcamp, an annual series of workshops for emerging screenwriters since 2008. She has served on the Island Media Arts Co-op, Women in Film and Television—Atlantic, and the PEI Council of the Arts committees. She is also the president of  the Charlottetown Film Society. She has written and directed several short films: Looking for Mr. RightHole in My HeartC J Superstar, and, most recently, The Appointment/Le Rendez-vous.

Screenwriting 101 takes place on November 23, from 9am until 4pm, at the Haviland Club in Charlottetown. The cost is $85 for Guild members and $95 for non-members. Registration is available on the PEIWG’s website (peiwritersguild.com).
