Coffee and Conversation Returns Thursday September 26, 10 –11:30 AM

Join us this Thursday, September 26th, for our first meeting of the fall season. Come and tell us what you have been doing this summer. And find out, for starters, why the existence of New York City depends on chocolate? And what does wheat have to do with the 24 hour day and 360 degrees? Bert C has arranged a schedule of guests for the fall, but is keeping the last Thursday of each month for conversation between members and their guests. On October 3, Will Hobbs and Bruce Craig will talk to us about the PEI Symphony, and October 10 Detective Constable Jason McKinnon will discuss investigative techniques.

The Haviland Club Pond Scotch Tasting, Friday October 25, 7 PM (Public Event)

Please join us for a wee dram—or rather, a series of wee drams—at the Haviland Club on Friday October 25th at 7 PM. Your host for the evening will be Mr. Gary Ready. Five single malts will be served, also smoked salmon on a bagel. Cost per person is $40.00, they’re available at the bar, and only 26 will be sold, so get yours soon!

The Haviland Club Book Club, Tuesday October 15, 7 PM

Here’s what the Book Club will be reading in coming months (by the way, Foe got a 6/10 rating from the group. As usual, some of the group found aspects others had missed—that’s why the conversation is so much fun.) For next month the club will read the humourous Curtains: Adventures of an Undertaker-in-Training, by Tom Jokinen to be followed by Testaments: A Novel by Margaret Atwood (sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale); The Other Side of the Sun, by Thien Tang; The Big Green Tent: A Novel,  by Ludmila Ulitskaya; Fifth Business,  by Robertson Davies; and Nostalgia,  by M G Vassanji. A busy season begins! Join the conversation!

Thanks Also!  Volunteers who are preparing to renew the Library by updating and enhancing the collection, and by working with President Tim to repaint the walls and wainscoting, and the Crafts Club for sewing and installing new drapes. Our guest will be Nora Jenkins, President, Friends of the Farm. Nora will review past efforts to preserve the land and buildings, and talk about the future.

Some people get into it, some less so, but it’s fun for all. You’ll have your chance to interpret clues, possible motives for potential wrong doing, and be part of a  team up with other guests and join in the fun of hunting for clues and collecting bits of gossip from the conversations around them to finally determine who dunnit and why?
