Welcome New Members!  At the January meeting, The Haviland Club Executive approved seven new memberships.

Thanks!  Bridge Clubs for organizing the successful Haviland Club Fundraiser, Bridge Luncheon/game last Saturday.  Thank you to all the bridge players who participated, and the Haviland Club for providing such a wonderful venue.

Thanks Also!  Volunteers who are preparing to renew the Library by updating and enhancing the collection, and by working with President Tim to repaint the walls and wainscoting, and the Crafts Club for sewing and installing new drapes. This is badly needed! We look forward to seeing the results! Making the room more attractive for rentals.

And Also Thanks!  To all of you, our  Members and renters, for your cooperation and patience as we undertake to repair and paint the Lounge, the hall and stairway!

And a Big Congrats!  To Hank, as the primary winner at Saturday Afternoon at the Races (although he wasn’t the only one to cash a ticket 🙂

 Upcoming Events

Thursday Coffee and Conversation With Nora Jenkins (Friends of the Farm), 10-11:30

As you drive along University Avenue, past the agriculture research station, have you ever wondered about the future of this land – which is open green space at the moment? Most research has been moved to the Harrington area. In the past there has been talk of a golf course, restaurants, university expansion, etc on this land. One organization as campaigned (successfully) to preserve this green space, which is now in the centre of the greater Charlottetown area. Our guest will be Nora Jenkins, President, Friends of the Farm. Nora will review past efforts to preserve the land and buildings, and talk about the future.

Next Thursday, February 7th, our guest will be Gerard Mitchell, commissioner for the Referendum. (And please remember: if schools are closed because of weather, Coffee and Conversation is cancelled for that day.)

MUSIC: Tara MacLean and Alicia Toner: Live at the Haviland Club, This Friday (Feb 1) at 8 PM (Public Event)

Super Bowl Sunday, This Sunday (Feb 3), 7 PM (Public Event)

Brady fan? Think the Rams are due? If you plan to come to the Super Bowl showing this Sunday—and we hope you do—please add your name to the sheet in the bar or call the Club to confirm so we know how many will be there. Marie has generously offered to make munchies, so we need numbers.

Romance Writer’s Workshop, February 9, 9 AM (Public Event)

The PEI Writers’ Guild is hosting a workshop entitled Heat Rising: Writing the Romantic Revolution. Open to both members and non-members of the Guild, the workshop will allow participants to learn more about romance writing. Led by Nova Scotia author Michelle Helliwell from Romance Writers of Atlantic Canada (RWAC), this event will cover not only the romance genre and what constitutes a “romance,” but will also dive deep into the romantic arc, the hero(one)’s journey, heat levels, romantic tension and how to build sexual tension, and how to write that sometimes awkward sex scene effectively. Helliwell will also inform participants about the publishing process specific to the romance genre. Register at peiwritersguild.com. For information visit peiwritersguild.com or email peiwritersguild@gmail.com.

Drop Dead Gorgeous 2; The Guy Who Didn’t Do It!  February 16, 7 PM (Public Event)

MURDER MYSTERY: Get your sleuth on! Come out for a fun participational evening. Dress up (Roaring Twenties, rum runners and bootleggers, flappers, or whatever you feel like—we’re having fun, eh?) and play your given character to the extent you feel comfortable. Some people get into it, some less so, but it’s fun for all. You’ll have your chance to interpret clues, possible motives for potential wrong doing, and be part of a  team up with other guests and join in the fun of hunting for clues and collecting bits of gossip from the conversations around them to finally determine who dunnit and why? The cost is only $10 for members, $20 for non-members, and although there’s lots of space it’s still limited, so get your tickets soon—in the taproom, or call 902-894-4421 to reserve.

St. Patrick’s Day Irish Whiskey Tasting, March 16, 7 PM. You’ve enjoyed The Haviland Club’s famous and fabulous Scotch Tastings, as put on by the Pond Committee—is it not high time for Irish? Of course it is, especially for St. Patrick’s Day. Gary Ready will host; five Irish Whiskey’s will be presented and tasted; a suitable snack will be served; there’ll be trivia, and by the end of the evening most of us will know more than we do now about the distillation of Irish spirits and how they differ from the Scottish. Tickets are $40 and available at the taproom bar, or by calling 902-894-4421. Many tickets have already been sold, so make that call soon!
