And also a Big Thanks:  To House Chair Pat for recolouring the grout in the lounge fireplace mantle—that’s what you’re looking at in the picture above. Great job, Pat! And we’re still grateful to Carol for arranging to have the mantles repaired and covering part of the cost. They look sooooo!! much better.

And a Note on Spam:  From time to time, members who’ve been regularly receiving this Newsletter don’t receive it. If that happens—if you’ve been getting it all along but then don’t—please check the spam/junk folder in your emails. We use the same email list each week, so it’s possible your email decided we were spam, silly thing that it is (PS: Free Google email does have limits on numbers of recipients in an Email B. Sanderson). If that doesn’t solve the problem, let the Club know and we will resend.

Next week, January 30th, our guest will be Gerry Fougere, Island EMS. Originally scheduled for Jan 9th but cancelled due to weather, Gerry will speak on “When to call 911; when to call an ambulance,” and other matters pertaining to EMS. LM Montgomery, better known to her friends as Maud, until the 1950s was the most famous novelist in Canada and some say in the world, selling hundreds of thousands of her books in various languages internationally. Over the past months David and Joscelynne have been  adapting some of the poetry of Maud Montgomery to music as well as developing songs in celebration of her life and work. Add this free spectacle to your Friday fun!

We don’t mean to tease with the poster below, but the Robbie Burns Scotch Tasting on February 7th is sold out. But! If you’d like to come, put your name on a list at the bar. We never know how things will work out.

Play Reading Group Monday February 10, 7:30 PM

The Haviland Readers Theatre will meet again at 7:30 PM on Monday, February 10 at the Haviland Club. We’ll be reading “Still Stands the House” by Gwen Pharis Ringwood, and (we hope!) “The Lesson” by Eugène Ionesco, with a discussion of both. Last week we read “Aria da Capo” by Edna St.Vincent Millay, a darkly humoured commentary on territorial divisions and human indifference. Though the play was first staged in 1920, it provides a remarkably contemporary thrust at present-day politics (e.g., The Wall!) Though the purpose of our Readers Theatre is just to enjoy reading the texts we choose, discussion afterwards is a lot of fun!

We would love to have you join our Play Reading Group! And, and this is important, if you plan to attend, please contact Robin at rscarson@icloud.com to be sent the material, as we distribute scripts by email. At the next meeting we will also be discussing plans for moving forward including the number of meetings in a month, script selection, reading ‘cold’ vs. polishing a presentation, and the mechanics of finding and distributing scripts. Remember, please contact Robin for scripts if you would like to join us (and we hope you do!)
