Welcome to 2020! Holy crazy calendars, Batman! Seems like Y2K was only a couple of years ago! Well, anyway, here’s what’s happening in the first week and month of the new decade.

The New Years Levee, A Resounding Success: The recent New Years Levee was another great success, with an estimated 750 people or more attending, people from 12 to 85 years of age, and the attendance of  a number of dignitaries including former Premiers, MP’s and MLA’s. President Tim and others took pleasure in discussions with elected Members about the Club’s importance as a cultural Center and meeting place.

A Huge 2020 Thanks to so many people for helping organize and deliver the levee: Carolyn and Charlie, Tim and Jo, Steve K for the Moose Milk, Jim and Marion, Sue for the lovely music, Laurent, Bert, Lennie, Louise C, Jamie and Jill and Brian—and others who brought sweets and helped out, and we sincerely hope we didn’t miss anyone. Thank you all—you make us proud.

If you’re not a Friday night regular, you’re missing an instant party—fun evenings of varied conversation with people you enjoy being with.

Play Reading Group Monday January 13, 7:30 PM

A number of people have said they thought of coming to the play reading group but hesitated. Why hesitate? This month we hope to pick a play, decide how it will be read, and give it a try. I mean, and this is a serious, philosophical question, why the heck not? Comments and questions please to rscarson@icloud.com or call 902-892-3373—or just show up, which is what we did the last time.

The Haviland Club Book Club, Tuesday January 21, 7 PM

This month comes the Christmas-delayed discussion of the fascinating, The Other Side of the Sun, a fascinating immigrant’s tale by Island writer Thien Tang. For next month, with the full support of the book club, leader Barbara suggests we read something other than The Big Green Tent, which those who’ve started it agree is a bit of a dud. SO… for February the book club is now reading My Friend Anna: The True Story of a Fake Heiress, a true story recently in the news. Check: A Fake Heiress Called Anna Delvey Conned the City’s Wealthy. ‘I’m Not Sorry,’ She Says.

Future readings include Fifth Business, by Robertson Davies; and Nostalgia,  by M G Vassanji. Come join the conversation!
